I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in November of 2019. My blood sugar was in the 180-200 range and my A1C count was 9. Both of these numbers were dangerously high. My doctor put me on medication, and I went on a low sugar/low carb diet to help regulate my blood sugar. Even while sticking with the medication and diet, I found my blood sugar readings were all over the place and still pretty high. My nutritionist recommended getting serious about adding an exercise program as the last leg of my treatment in order to stabilize my blood sugar and bring down that A1C. Reluctantly (I'm not the biggest fan of the exercise.) I joined The Rock Fitness Center in Cartersville. The staff was so sympathetic and caring. They took the time to answer my questions and show me the ropes.
Well, fast forward to my follow up doctor visit in February. My blood sugar has stabilized between 100-115, my A1C count was 6.5 and I've lost 20 pounds! I attribute a lot of my success to the addition of an exercise component to my health routine. I work out 3-5 times a week with a combination of cardio and weight-bearing exercises. It’s not always easy and heaven knows I'm not the traditional poster child for a gym membership, but results don't lie!! I'm on my way to becoming an exercise convert! It’s a real health miracle. We all have our own fitness journey. Thanks again to the staff at The Rock Fitness Center for helping me with mine.

I started at the end of April. The reason I started was that my blood pressure was out of control and I got tired of my kids seeing me get taken off by an ambulance over something I could control if I made better choices.
My biggest motivation is my wife and kids. I also use old pictures of myself so I remember how far I have come and what I don’t want to go back to.
When I started I set out to lose 100 pounds but now who knows how far I will go.
Every time I think about quitting I remember how much pain I was in all the time and how much better I feel and look now.
I never thought I would ever be able to lose weight much less to help other people. It takes a lot of hard work, it really hasn’t been easy.

This is when I first met Ka Leigh and really got into working out. Ka Leigh really inspired me as our stories had a lot of similarities. She has since become a best friend to me. In late 2015 I kind of "fell off the wagon" as you know "life happens". From late 2015-early 2019, I just gave it minimal effort. Most often not caring and not doing anything. Early 2019, Ka Leigh called me up and asked me to go to a class with her. I was hesitant bc hey I haven't done much of anything besides lifting a fork in 3 years. But I went and loved it. Not only the class but the great support and motivation from all the members/classmates. I have since rejoined the Rock and have gained loads of confidence and support from fellow gym mates that have turned into friends. As Tonya would say, come for the workout stay for the community.

Gosh! I absolutely love my Rock fam! They are all nothing short of Amazing. I started my journey in February 2019 and set a goal to make it to 200 pounds by the end of this year. I started out at 275 and I’m currently sitting at 234 pounds. There are hard days for sure, but how great I feel now compared to when I started is amazing. My goal is to be healthy so I can be around longer for my daughter! The picture on the left is from July 2018. The picture on the right was Early October this year. I have a long way to go but I’m determined to be a healthier me! – Kelly, Adairsville Rock Member
